Fast moving car at nightIt’s been proven that accident rates are three times higher at night than during the day.  Many fail to realize the special precautions that can be takes to decrease many of the risks associated with driving at night.  Toyota of Dothan wants to make sure that you are as safe as possible when navigating the nighttime roads.

Lack of visibility is an obvious factor when driving at night.  This lack of visibility slows reaction time and requires more intent driver focus.  This, combined with the higher probability of encountering wildlife and drivers under the influence create a higher potentially for a hazardous situation.  Following some of these tips can help to reduce your risk.

  • Check to make sure that all lights and signals are in proper working order.
  • Routinely clean the inside of windshield to reduce glare from oncoming headlights and streetlights.
  • Slow down and make sure you are not outdriving the beams of your headlights.
  • Remain alert and aware of your surroundings.  Don’t forget to look for deer and other wildlife that may be just off the side of the road.
  • Just as in rain or snow, make sure you keep adequate distance between your vehicle and others around you.
  • Use your low beams if you are facing oncoming traffic or behind another vehicle.
  • Focus your eyes on the right side of the road to avoid glare from oncoming traffic.
  • Remain aware of your level of fatigue.  If you feel tired, it is always best to err on the side of caution and pull over.  There is nothing more dangerous than a tired driver or a driver that has fallen asleep behind the wheel.
