Liddon Furniture

The Liddon Furniture building, located on Main Street in Dothan, features a stunning mural dedicated to the peanut industry. This beautiful painting portrays Dr. Washington Carver, who was a professor of architecture at Tuskegee Institute and developed over 300 uses for the peanut. As a result, the peanut has become the top agricultural product in this area, and this mural represents the importance of peanuts in the history of the Wiregrass region.

Foster Street

In the early 19th century, the area now known as Dothan had just a few paths. Steamboats served as the main mode of transportation, carrying and delivering cattle, turpentine, produce, cotton, and other supplies to towns throughout the region. Along Foster Street, you’ll see murals dedicated to the steamboat era.

St. Andrews Street

Another fascinating mural that shows some of the history and progress in the region is on St. Andrews Street. This mural, titled “Mules in the Wiregrass,” gives a visual history of when mules started to replace oxen to haul heavy loads and work in the fields. Mules played a major role in logging, pulling plows to clear land and haul the logs to other parts of the area.

With hand-painted murals on the sides of many historic and famous buildings in downtown Dothan, you’ll see some interesting and meaningful representations of the city’s history by looking closely at these art pieces.
