Hypermiling includes techniques that help increase your vehicle’s fuel efficiency by altering your driving techniques. While some methods are questionable due to safety concerns, there are plenty of ways you can use hypermiling safely to increase your fuel mileage.

  1. Maintain Your Vehicle

Regularly scheduled maintenance is important for any vehicle, but even more so if you want to be a pro at hypermiling.  Swap in high-performance spark plugs and use the lowest viscosity oil recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. You can also switch to synthetic oil, which reduces friction on the powertrain and can improve mileage.

Aligning and balancing your wheels will help improve efficiency as they won’t be weighted unevenly. Keep a tire gauge in your car and check the air pressure regularly. If tires aren’t inflated correctly, they can produce drag and lead to quicker wear and tear.

  1. Unload Your Vehicle

All that extra stuff that keeps piling up in your trunk is only weighing your vehicle down. To increase your car’s efficiency, empty it of unnecessary clutter. A lighter weight will help increase your vehicle’s gas mileage and efficiency.

  1. Drive Properly

Maintaining a steady speed is crucial when hypermiling. Pressing the gas pedal down quickly or slamming on the brakes adds unnecessary strain to your vehicle and eats up your fuel. Use your cruise control to maintain speed, or drive a little below the speed limit.

Next time you hit the road, keep these techniques in mind and you’ll soon find that you aren’t spending as much on gas and visits to the shop.

Some types are made to sit in the pocket of your car door and are produced of strong natural rubber that can counter offending smells. Others attach to your air conditioner vents and produce a light fragrance to override odors and freshen up your car.

Tractor-trailers can be intimidating for drivers. These large vehicles can create dangerous road situations when other vehicles aren’t sure how to drive around them. We’ve created this quick guide to provide some helpful safety tips to give you the confidence to safely share the road with tractor-trailers.

  1. Stay in Sight

Tractor-trailer trucks have blind zones due to their size. Areas immediately behind and to the right of the vehicle are the largest zones. Stay out of these areas to ensure that the driver can see you. This can decrease the chance of the truck merging into your car and helps increase the truck driver’s awareness. A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t see the driver in their rearview mirror, they can’t see you either.

  1. Leave Space

Tractor-trailers are very heavy and so it follows that they have a longer brake time than other vehicles. Give them plenty of space when you’re driving so that they have appropriate room to brake. This is especially important if you merge in front of a truck. Merging and then braking in front of a tractor-trailer can spell tragedy.

Another reason to leave space is to avoid buffeting winds. Tractor-trailers often create wind channels behind them which can affect lighter cars and cause them to fishtail. If you start to feel your car shaking when driving behind a tractor-trailer, move to another lane.

These tips can help you safely share the road with tractor-trailers. With a little bit of thought, we can keep the roads safe for everyone!
