Not only is Dothan a great area for country music lovers, but it’s also home to one of the best country entertainment venues in the country. In addition to Cowboys, there are also a few other places where you can go to hear country music.

1. Cowboys

Cowboys has been a favorite venue for country music since 1980. It’s the largest honky-tonk east of the Mississippi, and in addition to the music, there are five pool tables, four bars, a snack bar, and a huge dance floor with room for 300 people. With its impressive lineup of artists, Cowboys is the place for live music in Dothan. This March, you can catch Mustang Sally, Sabin Sharpe, and Shelby Lee Lowe.

2. The Plant

The Plant in downtown Dothan welcomes all types of music artists including country music performers. Once a Coca-Cola factory, The Plant is now a music venue that sports the latest technology. Cody Johnson will perform on March 23 with special guest Frank Foster, and Drake White, an Alabama native, will perform with Jordan Brooker on April 5. You can also see bands such as Black Stone Cherry and Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown for a Southern rock experience in May.

1. Stay in Sight

Tractor-trailer trucks have blind zones due to their size. Areas immediately behind and to the right of the vehicle are the largest zones. Stay out of these areas to ensure that the driver can see you. This can decrease the chance of the truck merging into your car and helps increase the truck driver’s awareness. A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t see the driver in their rearview mirror, they can’t see you either.

2. Leave Space

Tractor-trailers are very heavy and so it follows that they have a longer brake time than other vehicles. Give them plenty of space when you’re driving so that they have appropriate room to brake. This is especially important if you merge in front of a truck. Merging and then braking in front of a tractor-trailer can spell tragedy.

Another reason to leave space is to avoid buffeting winds. Tractor-trailers often create wind channels behind them which can affect lighter cars and cause them to fishtail. If you start to feel your car shaking when driving behind a tractor-trailer, move to another lane.

As part of our Peanuts Around Town project, the city of Dothan has scattered giant peanuts throughout the city as tribute to one of the most important and distinctive crops in the area! Check out some of these unique installations and spend some time exploring Dothan. Here are our three favorite spots to see the giant peanuts.

Dothan Visitor’s Bureau

Dothan’s Visitor’s Bureau is a great place to start for visitors and residents who want to learn more about the city. From maps to tour information, the bureau has a wealth of information. It’s also home to one of the Peanuts Around Town installations: the Elvis Nut! Rocking the signature glitzy costume and a cool hairdo, this is a must-see for Elvis fans.

Downtown Dothan

Downtown has several peanuts on display for your viewing pleasure. Check out the Downtown Peanut, which holds the directory sign to the bustling downtown area. It was the first peanut on public property and is a favorite with guests. The Paper Boy is located outside of The Dothan Eagle and is a fun nod to Dothan’s past.

Ross Clark Circle

Another favorite is the collection of peanuts representing the armed forces, each with a different design. They can be found on Ross Clark Circle, just outside the Tuffy Auto Service Center. They’re a fitting addition to the Peanuts Around Town project, given Dothan is just a quick trip away from Fort Rucker’s military base.

Wiregrass Museum of Art

The Wiregrass Museum of Art is a notable place to start when exploring the arts community of Dothan. They have phenomenal art exhibits that feature both Alabama-based artists and internationally renowned creators. The art museum has one of the largest collections of Frank Stella prints in Alabama. Most of their permanent collection consists of art on paper.
