Accidents occurring due to wildlife near or on the road occurs approximately every 39 minutes with one out of every 17 collisions involving wandering wildlife.  Toyota of Dothan wants to help keep you from  becoming one of these statistics with tips on how to lessen your likelihood of a wildlife related collision.

  • Pay attention to the animal crossing signs.  These signs are placed there as warnings in areas where there has been frequent documented wildlife activity.  Use particular caution when driving in these areas.
  • Remember that wildlife is most active during dusk, dawn and night.  Be on the lookout during these time.
  • Keep your headlights illumination range in mind when driving.  Make sure to allow for sufficient time to stop your vehicle in the event you spot an animal.
  • Pay particular attention to the shoulder of the road.  If there is an animal by the side of the road, slow down and don’t hesitate to use your horn.
  • Look for eyes that may be reflecting from your headlights.
  • Remember that deer and other animals typically travel in groups.  If you see one, there are likely to be others following closely behind.

One of the age-old questions surrounding wildlife in the roadway is whether it is better to swerve or not swerve.  Most expert agree that unless it is a moose, it is better to not swerve.  Your best bet is to hit the brakes and honk your horn.  You are more likely to have a severe accident from trying to swerve than from colliding with the animal.
