As this year winds to a close, begin to consider New Year’s resolutions that you will really be able to act on in 2019. For a greener start to the year, make a promise to improve fuel efficiency with one of these easy methods.
1. Stick to Your Vehicle’s Fuel Type
Check your owner’s manual for the ideal type of fuel for your car. Chances are, the regular unleaded gas is just right for your vehicle. Three quarters of car owners can use regular fuel to maximum benefit, with the higher performance sports cars needing higher octane gas.
2. Inflate Your Tires
One of the easiest ways to improve your fuel efficiency is the ensure that your tires are inflated to the correct pressure level as noted in your vehicle manual. Invest in a tire gauge that can give a quick and accurate read of your air levels so you know when to head to the gas station for a quick inflation. Many cars now come with an indicator that lights up to alert you to the need for some extra air.
3. Cruising With Cruise Control
When driving on a highway, take advantage of your cruise control. Aside from giving your leg a bit of a rest, using cruise control on the highway can reduce your fuel consumption by six percent.
4. Lighten Your Load
Give some extra thought to everything you have in your car, and only bring what (and who) you need. Carrying around extra jugs of water or those “just in case” golf clubs can increase your fuel consumption.
