2022 Toyota Highlander

vs 2022 Honda Pilot

Conquer the road in the new 2022 Toyota Highlander. Its elevated view, standard capability, high-tech safety system and spacious second- and third-row seats offer plenty to go around. You’ll be impressed with convenience features like an available height-adjustable, hands-free power liftgate with jam protection, which protects small fingers from getting caught in between the closing door. A massive panoramic glass roof with a sunshade is available to add to your trim so back-seat passengers can watch the starry night on the ride home. Need a little referee help? Use the optional Driver Easy Speak system to amplify your voice all the way to the third row. Interior amenities aren’t just about convenience — you’ll be able to relax into an available leather-trimmed, heated and ventilated driver’s seat after a long day at the office.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander has impressed critics and customers alike, but can it hold its own against the rivaling 2022 Honda Pilot? Let’s see how these two full-size SUVs compare below.

The running was close, but the 2022 Toyota Highlander comes out of this race unscathed. Both SUVs offer drivers their own branded all-wheel drive and safety systems, but that’s really where the comparison stops. The Toyota Highlander L offers Sport, Eco, Normal and Snow mode, even when equipped with front-wheel drive. The Honda Pilot Sport, however, only has Snow mode — two additional drive modes are available on higher (and more expensive) trims. Need your SUV to have a standard capability that rivals some pickups? Don’t go with the Honda Pilot. Its base maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds2 — the Toyota Highlander can tow 5,000 pounds on its base model.1 And when it comes to technology, the Toyota Highlander offers the largest available touchscreen size of the two models and an available 10-inch Head-Up Display (which the Pilot has missing from its feature entirely).

For us, it’s a clear choice (especially when you see that the Toyota Highlander offers a hybrid option). If you’re ready for an upgrade, make it a 2022 Toyota Highlander.

1Before towing, confirm your vehicle and trailer are compatible, hooked up and loaded properly and that you have any necessary additional equipment. Do not exceed any Weight Ratings and follow all instructions in your Owner’s Manual. The maximum you can tow depends on base curb weight plus the total weight of any cargo, occupants, and added vehicle equipment. “Added vehicle equipment” includes additional standard/optional equipment and accessories added by the manufacturer, dealers, and/or vehicle owners. The only way to be certain of your vehicle’s exact curb weight is to weigh your vehicle without passengers or cargo. [Calculated with the new SAE J2807 method.] Installation of a tow hitch receiver or other accessories located near the rear bumper or side-door kick sensors may require disabling or removing the kick sensor, and the sensor operation setting in your vehicle should be turned off. See Owner’s Manual for limitations.
2Maximum towing capacity for AWD trims is 5,000 lbs. Maximum towing capacity for 2WD trims is 3,500 lbs. Towing requires accessory towing equipment. Please see your Honda dealer for details.
